Who doesn’t know what a PC is? Personal Computers are one of the most defining features of our time. Machines that are great for work, for fun and for studying. But what PC really is? The Wiki says it’s a “multi-purpose electronic computer whose size, capabilities and price make it feasible for individual use”. But it gets better: “Personal Computers are intended to be operated directly by an end-user, rather than by a computer expert or technician”. Computers were originally invented to “compute” and solve complex mathematical problems. Today, everything is different and their original purpose is actually the least important one. Instead, they are used for gathering data (internet), entertainment (video games, movies, music, etc) and work. Since the early 1990s, Microsoft operating systems and Intel hardware have dominated the PC market. There are alternatives to Microsoft Windows operating system but they still occupy a minority share of the industry. These include Apple's iOS and free open-source operating systems (e.g. Linux and Chrome OS).
Racing games (also known as racing simulators or racing sims) are video games that attempt to accurately simulate auto racing. Various real-world variables (e.g. fuel usage, damage, tire wear, grip, and other) are also implemented into the game. To be competitive in a racing sim, players must understand all aspects of car handling that make real-world racing so difficult. Some racing video games are completely devoid of many real-world aspects and focus solely on the speed and adrenaline. These games are called driving games. Racing games are made for players who enjoy challenging gameplay. Top franchises like Need For Speed, Colin McRae Rally, NASCAR Racing, Gran Turismo and F1 Racing Simulator are renown for their large fanbase and a great attachment to details. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
