Players are obstructing enemy attackers by placing defensive structures (towers) along their regular path of attack. This typically means raising a variety of different structures which can be used to block, impede, attack and destroy the attackers. Tower defense is generally seen as a subgenre of RTS video games, due to its real-time origins. That said, many modern tower defense games also include aspects of a turn-based strategy.
