Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. Games with a particularly high level of autonomy are typically MMORPGs (e.g. World of Warcraft) and sometimes also classic single-player RPGs (like the Fallout series). The most appealing trait of typical open world games is that they try to simulate reality and allow players to develop many aspects of their gameplay (e.g. character, world, questline, etc.). In Single Player mode, only one player is expected to participate in every gaming session. The term “Single Player video game” usually refers to a game that can only be played by one person. The “Single Player mode” usually refers to a particular game mode that is designed for one player, though the game also contains other modes (that can be played by several players simultaneously). Single Player games rely heavily on compelling stories and immersive settings. The point of this is drawing players into the experience and creating a sense of investment. XCOM is a reboot of the original X-Com, created by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. It’s a sci-fi video game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasion of Earth. The series began in 1994 with the strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown. The original franchise (developed by MicroProse) included six published games and two novelizations. The series achieved a sizable cult following and has influenced many other video games; including the creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes. The XCOM series began in 2012 with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was a critical and commercial success, with immediately spawn an expansion, called Enemy Within, as well as a prequel, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Tekken is a video game franchise created, developed, and published by Namco Bandai. All Tekken titles focus on a series of fighting games but the franchise has also been adapted into other media (e.g. movies). The story revolves mainly around the Mishima clan and a long-lasting conflict between Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya Mishima. There are currently six main installments to the series - each one of them focusing on the events of the King of Iron Fist Tournament. After beating the game, an ending cutscene is unlocked (one for every character). Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 were truly breakthrough titles and are considered among the best fighting games of all time (Tekken 3 is actually the second best selling fighting game to date). The series itself is the best selling fighting game franchise in the history of gaming. Interesting fact: Tekken was one of the first fighting games which utilized the 3D animation. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
