Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. Sid Meier’s Civilization (also known as Civ) is a series consisting of several turn-based strategy video games. Sid Meier developed the first game in the series in 1991 (and oversaw most of the sequels) Because of that, his name is included in the formal title of most Civ games.
