Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. Games with a particularly high level of autonomy are typically MMORPGs (e.g. World of Warcraft) and sometimes also classic single-player RPGs (like the Fallout series). The most appealing trait of typical open world games is that they try to simulate reality and allow players to develop many aspects of their gameplay (e.g. character, world, questline, etc.). Sid Meier’s Civilization (also known as Civ) is a series consisting of several turn-based strategy video games. Sid Meier developed the first game in the series in 1991 (and oversaw most of the sequels) Because of that, his name is included in the formal title of most Civ games. There have since been six main installments in the series, as well as a number of expansion packs, spin-off games, and even board games. The series is considered a prime example of the “4X” genre, in which players can achieve victory through four main routes. These routes are eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, respectively. Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard in Japan), is a survival horror video game franchise created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara and owned by Capcom. The franchise revolves mostly around a series of survival horror video games but has also spawned numerous movies, comic books, novelizations, sound dramas, and even action figures. The series' plot focuses on multiple characters and their role in recurring outbreaks of zombies and other horrible monsters. These events are triggered by the release of the infamous T-virus (and other biological weapons) created by the fictional Umbrella Corporation. The first Resident Evil game was released in early 1996 as a survival horror, but the franchise has since grown to encompass also other video game genres. Today, it’s a fusion of action-adventure, TPP, and horror-inspired plotlines but also employs some level exploration and simple puzzle solving.
