Roguelike games are a very specific subgenre of RPG video games, designed by the hardcore fans for the hardcore fans. This type of games is characterized by a dungeon crawl through randomly generated levels, tile-based graphics, turn-based gameplay, and (most importantly) by the permanent death of the main character. Most roguelike video games are based on a high fantasy narrative, as they are heavily influenced by classic RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. The 1980 game Rogue is widely considered as the forerunner, the namesake of the genre, and the best of all time. It’s worth noting that roguelike games were popularized among the college students and computer programmers in the 1980s and 1990s. This resulted in a large number of variants but still sticking to aforementioned gameplay elements. Top modern roguelikes are The Binding of Isaac, FTL: Faster Than Light, and Rogue Legacy and Spelunky. Games Republic. Only the best roguelike games for every hardcore PC gamer. The term “Single-player video game” usually refers to a game that can only be played by one person. The “Single-player mode” usually refers to a particular game mode that is designed for one player, though the game also contains other modes (that can be played by several players simultaneously). The majority of modern video games are designed so that they can be played in Single-player. Although many of these games have modes that allow two or more players to have fun, very few require more than one player for the game to be played. A good example is The Unreal Tournament series. Single-player games rely heavily on compelling stories and immersive settings. The point of this is drawing players into the experience and creating a sense of investment. Humans are unpredictable and therefore players cannot be relied upon to carry a narrative in a particular direction. Because of this fact, most multiplayer games try not to focus on a linear narrative. By contrast, many Single-player games are built around a compelling story and interactions with the in-game world.Remember the time when open-world games were a novelty? Well, there is one particular title that contributed more than the most to this aspect of video game mechanics. What game are we talking about? Take a wild guess. Gothic is an action RPG franchise, developed and owned by German studio called Piranha Bytes. However, the latest installment in the spin-off series was developed by Spellbound Entertainment. The Gothic games’ setting is a medieval fantasy world, in which humans are losing the war against the orcish armies. The protagonist, a young nameless man, is forced to work his way up, from being a convict in the penal colony to saving the world from the ancient evil. In order to continue the fight against the countless orcs, demons and the undead, our protagonist has to gather much-needed experience, form alliances, and develop into a real hero of Myrtana. The franchise consists of three main games, two large expansions, and an official spinoff, Arcania. This spinoff, Arcania is set in the same universe and shares many aspects with the original Gothic series. Gothic games were extremely successful and, in many ways, groundbreaking. You should definitely give them a chance!Hide
