Real-time tactics (also known as RTT) is a subgenre of tactical war video games played in real-time. These games are simulating the circumstances of operational warfare and various military tactics. RTT is differentiated from real-time strategy gameplay by the lack of resource management and base or unit building. Instead, it focuses on the importance of individual units and battlefield tactics. Unlike the typical RPG video games, RTT titles don’t have resource-gathering, production, or economic management elements in them. Instead, they focus on tactical and operational aspects of war such as the use of terrain for tactical advantage or unit formations. In RTT games players usually have to complete their tasks by using only the forces provided to them, and by the provision of a realistic representation of military tactics. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
