Platform games (also known as platformers) are one of the oldest video game genres. Their main mechanic focuses around maneuvering an avatar to jump between platforms and over different obstacles to progress in the game. Jumps, attacks and all other movements are controlled by the player. Platform games were developed in the early 1980s but popularized in the mid-1990s. The term “platform games” describes titles in which jumping on platforms is considered an integral part of the gameplay. It was established no later than in 1983. The best and most well-known platform games are Super Mario Bros, Contra, Trine, and Rayman. Most of these franchises already have a cult status among their fans. Sonic the Hedgehog is a very popular video game franchise created by Sega. The franchise consists mostly of speed-based platform games but it has been spun out into other media (cartoons, anime, comic book series, etc.) as well. Aside from the aforementioned platformers, Sonic games consist of puzzle, fighting, and even RPG titles. The series’ protagonist is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog named Sonic, who tries to stop the diabolical Doctor Eggman and foil his plans of world domination. Thankfully, Sonic is not alone as he can always count on his friends: Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog video game series has sold over 80 million physical copies (over 350 million units with mobile downloads). When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
