With the advancement of the internet, video games started to evolve as well. One of the major changes was an introduction to the Multiplayer mode. In Multiplayer, more than one person can play in the same game environment at the same time. Before the internet era, video games were mostly Single Player activities, putting the player against preset challenges and AI-controlled opponents (which lacked the flexibility and unpredictability of human mind). Multiplayer games allow players to interact with each other in partnership, rivalry or competition, giving them a level of social communication absent in Single Player titles. In Multiplayer games, players may compete against two (or more) human contestants, work cooperatively with a human partner to achieve a common goal, and even supervise other players' activity. Multiplayer games typically require players to share the resources of a single game system or use networking technology to play together over a greater distance. A video game franchise commonly associated with multiplayer is Counter-Strike. Massively Multiplayer Online games (also called MMOs) are a variation of multiplayer games in which a very large number of players can interact with one another within a virtual world. The best example of an MMO game is World of Warcraft.
Street Fighter, commonly known as SF (or Suto in Japan), is a fighting video game franchise created and published by Capcom. The second game in the series, Street Fighter II, is widely considered as the one which pioneered the one-on-one fighting genre. The franchise’s main feature is a large number of playable characters, each with a unique fighting style. Street Fighter was immensely successful worldwide and is said to be Capcom's second best-selling franchise to date. It’s also a very old series as the first game was released back in 1987. The best-selling game in the franchise was (Of course!) Street Fighter II, which exceeded $1.5 billion in sales revenue in 1993 (today it would be over $2.65 billion). Remember the time when open-world games were a novelty? Well, there is one particular title that contributed more than the most to this aspect of video game mechanics. What game are we talking about? Take a wild guess. Gothic is an action RPG franchise, developed and owned by German studio called Piranha Bytes. However, the latest installment in the spin-off series was developed by Spellbound Entertainment. The Gothic games’ setting is a medieval fantasy world, in which humans are losing the war against the orcish armies. The protagonist, a young nameless man, is forced to work his way up, from being a convict in the penal colony to saving the world from the ancient evil. In order to continue the fight against the countless orcs, demons and the undead, our protagonist has to gather much-needed experience, form alliances, and develop into a real hero of Myrtana. The franchise consists of three main games, two large expansions, and an official spinoff, Arcania. This spinoff, Arcania is set in the same universe and shares many aspects with the original Gothic series. Gothic games were extremely successful and, in many ways, groundbreaking. You should definitely give them a chance!
