War. War never changes. Every time you play a Fallout game, those legendary words are coming out of the speakers. Fallout is a franchise consisting of eight post-apocalyptic role-playing video games created in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. All events in the series are set in the 22nd and 23rd century. It’s a dystopian, retrofuturistic world heavily influenced by the America’s post-war culture (a unique combination of hope, technology, fear, and nuclear annihilation). The Fallout series is said to be a spiritual successor of 1988’s Wasteland. Although the game worlds are different, the story, locations, inhabitants, and characters (both playable and non-playable) draw many parallels. The first two installments in the series, Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998), were developed by Black Isle Studios and are considered groundbreaking among the RPG fans. Since the release of Fallout 3 (2008) the franchise took a different approach. Fallout games became first-person shooters (with some RPG elements) set in the open world. It made the gameplay more simple and accessible, a fact that was both praised and criticized by the series’ fans. The most recent installment in the series is Fallout 4, released in late 2015. Hitman is a stealth video game series developed by the IO Interactive. The story revolves around Agent 47 (usually referred to as “47” or “Mr. 47”), a genetically engineered assassin, whose flawless record places him in high demand. The core objective of every level is to kill an assigned target (and sometimes also additional targets). In most cases, Hitman games allow the player many different options to accomplish their objective. Players can perform precise assassinations or slaughter mindlessly but the game tends to reward a subtle approach. 47 can also wear a variety of disguises (police officers, firemen, waiters, technicians, and so on) to his fool enemies and gain access to many otherwise restricted areas. The focus of Hitman is not hiding in the shadows, but rather blending in amongst enemies. Previously published by Eidos Interactive, and currently published by Square Enix, the Hitman series is available on Microsoft Windows as well as several video game consoles, including the Xbox, PlayStation, and GameCube. The original game series has also expanded into a novelization, Hitman: Enemy Within, followed by two film adaptations (in 2007 and 2015), which are loosely based on the games’ storyline.
