Construction and management simulation (CMS or management games) is a subgenre of simulation games in which players can build, expand and/or manage fictional buildings, cities or even countries. Typical features of CMS games are limited resources and various economic and environmental factors (pollution, crime, land prices) that have to be taken into consideration. Strategy video games often try to incorporate CMS aspects into their gameplay. Players have to manage their resources while continuously expanding their project. XCOM is a reboot of the original X-Com, created by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. It’s a sci-fi video game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasion of Earth. The series began in 1994 with the strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown. The original franchise (developed by MicroProse) included six published games and two novelizations. The series achieved a sizable cult following and has influenced many other video games; including the creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes. The XCOM series began in 2012 with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was a critical and commercial success, with immediately spawn an expansion, called Enemy Within, as well as a prequel, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
