Who doesn’t know what a PC is? Personal Computers are one of the most defining features of our time. Machines that are great for work, for fun and for studying. But what PC really is? The Wiki says it’s a “multi-purpose electronic computer whose size, capabilities and price make it feasible for individual use”. But it gets better: “Personal Computers are intended to be operated directly by an end-user, rather than by a computer expert or technician”. Computers were originally invented to “compute” and solve complex mathematical problems. Today, everything is different and their original purpose is actually the least important one. Instead, they are used for gathering data (internet), entertainment (video games, movies, music, etc) and work. Since the early 1990s, Microsoft operating systems and Intel hardware have dominated the PC market. There are alternatives to Microsoft Windows operating system but they still occupy a minority share of the industry. These include Apple's iOS and free open-source operating systems (e.g. Linux and Chrome OS).
Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. Games with a particularly high level of autonomy are typically MMORPGs (e.g. World of Warcraft) and sometimes also classic single-player RPGs (like the Fallout series). The most appealing trait of typical open world games is that they try to simulate reality and allow players to develop many aspects of their gameplay (e.g. character, world, questline, etc.). It should also be noted that sandbox games don’t have a specific goal or pre-defined ending. War. War never changes. Every time you play a Fallout game, those legendary words are coming out of the speakers. Fallout is a franchise consisting of eight post-apocalyptic role-playing video games created in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. All events in the series are set in the 22nd and 23rd century. It’s a dystopian, retrofuturistic world heavily influenced by the America’s post-war culture (a unique combination of hope, technology, fear, and nuclear annihilation). The Fallout series is said to be a spiritual successor of 1988’s Wasteland. Although the game worlds are different, the story, locations, inhabitants, and characters (both playable and non-playable) draw many parallels. The first two installments in the series, Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998), were developed by Black Isle Studios and are considered groundbreaking among the RPG fans. Since the release of Fallout 3 (2008) the franchise took a different approach. Fallout games became first-person shooters (with some RPG elements) set in the open world. It made the gameplay more simple and accessible, a fact that was both praised and criticized by the series’ fans. The most recent installment in the series is Fallout 4, released in late 2015.
