In Single Player mode, only one player is expected to participate in every gaming session. The term “Single Player video game” usually refers to a game that can only be played by one person. The “Single Player mode” usually refers to a particular game mode that is designed for one player, though the game also contains other modes (that can be played by several players simultaneously). The majority of modern video games are designed so that they can be played in Single Player. Although many of these games have modes that allow two or more players to have fun, very few require more than one player for the game to be played. A good example is The Unreal Tournament series. Single Player games rely heavily on compelling stories and immersive settings. The point of this is drawing players into the experience and creating a sense of investment. Humans are unpredictable and therefore players cannot be relied upon to carry a narrative in a particular direction. Because of this fact, most multiplayer games try not to focus on a linear narrative. By contrast, many Single Player games are built around a compelling story and interactions with the in-game world.
XCOM is a reboot of the original X-Com, created by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. It’s a sci-fi video game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasion of Earth. The series began in 1994 with the strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown. The original franchise (developed by MicroProse) included six published games and two novelizations. The series achieved a sizable cult following and has influenced many other video games; including the creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes. The XCOM series began in 2012 with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was a critical and commercial success, with immediately spawn an expansion, called Enemy Within, as well as a prequel, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Hitman is a stealth video game series developed by the IO Interactive. The story revolves around Agent 47 (usually referred to as “47” or “Mr. 47”), a genetically engineered assassin, whose flawless record places him in high demand. The core objective of every level is to kill an assigned target (and sometimes also additional targets). In most cases, Hitman games allow the player many different options to accomplish their objective. Players can perform precise assassinations or slaughter mindlessly but the game tends to reward a subtle approach. 47 can also wear a variety of disguises (police officers, firemen, waiters, technicians, and so on) to his fool enemies and gain access to many otherwise restricted areas. The focus of Hitman is not hiding in the shadows, but rather blending in amongst enemies. Previously published by Eidos Interactive, and currently published by Square Enix, the Hitman series is available on Microsoft Windows as well as several video game consoles, including the Xbox, PlayStation, and GameCube. The original game series has also expanded into a novelization, Hitman: Enemy Within, followed by two film adaptations (in 2007 and 2015), which are loosely based on the games’ storyline.
