Total War is a franchise consisting of 10 strategy video games developed by Creative Assembly and published by Electronic Arts. All of the Total War games are considered textbook strategy games as they combine the elements of RTS and TBS (the turn-based strategy with real-time battle tactics). Another important part of gameplay is resource management. The first of the series, Shogun: Total War was released in 2000 and introduced some new mechanics to the genre. The entire series sold over 20 million units worldwide and is considered one of the best strategy franchises of all time. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
