War. War never changes. Every time you play a Fallout game, those legendary words are coming out of the speakers. Fallout is a franchise consisting of eight post-apocalyptic role-playing video games created in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. All events in the series are set in the 22nd and 23rd century. It’s a dystopian, retrofuturistic world heavily influenced by the America’s post-war culture (a unique combination of hope, technology, fear, and nuclear annihilation). The Fallout series is said to be a spiritual successor of 1988’s Wasteland. Although the game worlds are different, the story, locations, inhabitants, and characters (both playable and non-playable) draw many parallels. The first two installments in the series, Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998), were developed by Black Isle Studios and are considered groundbreaking among the RPG fans. Since the release of Fallout 3 (2008) the franchise took a different approach. Fallout games became first-person shooters (with some RPG elements) set in the open world. It made the gameplay more simple and accessible, a fact that was both praised and criticized by the series’ fans. The most recent installment in the series is Fallout 4, released in late 2015. Max Payne is a video game franchise created by Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Studios. It is named after the game’s protagonist, Max Payne, a detective who became a vigilante after the murder of his entire family. The series' first (2001) and second (2003) installments were written by Sam Lake and Max Payne 3 (2012) by Dan Houser. There was also a movie adaptation, loosely based on the original game, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. The movie came out in 2008. The Max Payne franchise is notable for its introduction and use of “bullet time” in many of its action sequences. All three games were very positively received by critics and gamers alike. The series has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and is to this day considered by many players as one of the most influential in TPP action games.
