Survival horror is a subgenre of action-adventure video games heavily inspired by horror fiction. It is typically focused on the character’s survival as the game continuously tries to scare him/her with either graphics or sound effects. Although combat can be an integral part of the gameplay, the player is rarely in control of it (unlike in the typical action game). The reasons behind this are limited ammunition, poor vision, and various other obstructions preventing player's interaction with the in-game world. The player also needs to find certain items which then allow him/her to unlock the path to new areas and therefore make progress in the game. The games’ historical setting starts from Great Depression-era Lost Heaven (Mafia), and Empire Bay (Mafia II) to 1960s New Bordeaux (Mafia III). All Mafia games offer the players a big open world where they can choose various missions to progress an overall story and engage in numerous side activities. Every single game in the Mafia series focuses on a different protagonist who usually attempts to rise through the ranks of the city’s criminal underworld. Although their actions usually result in them falling out of favor, their motives are different in each installment. Mafia games are renown for being immersive and accurate in their portrayal of American history. This, combined with an open world and great soundtrack, was enough to place the franchise among the best of its genre. If you like games like GTA and Watchdogs, Mafia is definitely a game for you. Bayonetta is a series of TPP action games created by PlatinumGames. Its first installment was originally released in 2009 (Japan) and 2010 (North America and Europe). Originally it was a PlayStation-only title but in 2014 the game was also released on the Wii U alongside its sequel, Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta’s port for Microsoft Windows was released in April 2017. Bayonetta takes place in Vigrid, a fictional European city. The games’ protagonist (and titular character) is a witch, capable of shapeshifting and proficient in using various weapons. She can also summon demons and use multiple magical attacks. Bayonetta features a great combat system, very is similar to the Devil May Cry series. Both games received very good reviews and were praised for their combat mechanics and soundtrack. The first Bayonetta game sold over 1.5 million units worldwide and was awarded and nominated for several end-of-the-year accolades. Fun fact: An anime adaptation, titled Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, was released in 2013. If you like non-stop action and fluid combat mechanics, Bayonetta games are the perfect pick for you.
