Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. XCOM is a reboot of the original X-Com, created by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. It’s a sci-fi video game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasion of Earth. The series began in 1994 with the strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown. The original franchise (developed by MicroProse) included six published games and two novelizations. The series achieved a sizable cult following and has influenced many other video games; including the creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes. The XCOM series began in 2012 with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was a critical and commercial success, with immediately spawn an expansion, called Enemy Within, as well as a prequel, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. The original game series has also expanded into a novelization, Hitman: Enemy Within, followed by two film adaptations (in 2007 and 2015), which are loosely based on the games’ storyline.
