Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. The first Resident Evil game was released in early 1996 as a survival horror, but the franchise has since grown to encompass also other video game genres. Today, it’s a fusion of action-adventure, TPP, and horror-inspired plotlines but also employs some level exploration and simple puzzle solving. The franchise consists of three main games, two large expansions, and an official spinoff, Arcania. This spinoff, Arcania is set in the same universe and shares many aspects with the original Gothic series. Gothic games were extremely successful and, in many ways, groundbreaking.
