Sandbox is a loose term used to describe the open world video games. In a typical sandbox RPG, players can move freely through a virtual world and are given particular freedom in regard to objective approach - unlike in other RPG games with more linear structure. A sandbox RPG usually lacks the invisible walls and/or loading screens (a common trait of linear level designs) but still has some restrictions in the game environment. Games with a particularly high level of autonomy are typically MMORPGs (e.g. World of Warcraft) and sometimes also classic single-player RPGs (like the Fallout series). The most appealing trait of typical open world games is that they try to simulate reality and allow players to develop many aspects of their gameplay (e.g. character, world, questline, etc.). It should also be noted that sandbox games don’t have a specific goal or pre-defined ending. War. War never changes. Every time you play a Fallout game, those legendary words are coming out of the speakers. Fallout is a franchise consisting of eight post-apocalyptic role-playing video games created in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. All events in the series are set in the 22nd and 23rd century. It’s a dystopian, retrofuturistic world heavily influenced by the America’s post-war culture (a unique combination of hope, technology, fear, and nuclear annihilation). The Fallout series is said to be a spiritual successor of 1988’s Wasteland. The first two installments in the series, Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998), were developed by Black Isle Studios and are considered groundbreaking among the RPG fans. Since the release of Fallout 3 (2008) the franchise took a different approach. Fallout games became first-person shooters (with some RPG elements) set in the open world. It made the gameplay more simple and accessible, a fact that was both praised and criticized by the series’ fans. The most recent installment in the series is Fallout 4, released in late 2015. Sid Meier’s Civilization (also known as Civ) is a series consisting of several turn-based strategy video games. Sid Meier developed the first game in the series in 1991 (and oversaw most of the sequels) Because of that, his name is included in the formal title of most Civ games. There have since been six main installments in the series, as well as a number of expansion packs, spin-off games, and even board games. The series is considered a prime example of the “4X” genre, in which players can achieve victory through four main routes. These routes are eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, respectively. All of the Civilization games share similar gameplay focused on building a civilization - from prehistoric times to the near future (and sometimes even beyond that point). Civilization uses historical aspects from the development of mankind. On each turn, players can oversee their government and choose which technological, cultural, and civil routes their civilization should focus on. Other important aspects of the gameplay are diplomacy and war. It should be noted that Civilization is one of the most successful strategy franchises with over 40 million units sold worldwide.
