Racing games (also known as racing simulators or racing sims) are video games that attempt to accurately simulate auto racing. Various real-world variables (e.g. fuel usage, damage, tire wear, grip, and other) are also implemented into the game. To be competitive in a racing sim, players must understand all aspects of car handling that make real-world racing so difficult. Some racing video games are completely devoid of many real-world aspects and focus solely on the speed and adrenaline. These games are called driving games. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
Bayonetta is a series of TPP action games created by PlatinumGames. Its first installment was originally released in 2009 (Japan) and 2010 (North America and Europe). Originally it was a PlayStation-only title but in 2014 the game was also released on the Wii U alongside its sequel, Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta’s port for Microsoft Windows was released in April 2017. Bayonetta takes place in Vigrid, a fictional European city. The games’ protagonist (and titular character) is a witch, capable of shapeshifting and proficient in using various weapons. She can also summon demons and use multiple magical attacks. Bayonetta features a great combat system, very is similar to the Devil May Cry series. Both games received very good reviews and were praised for their combat mechanics and soundtrack. The first Bayonetta game sold over 1.5 million units worldwide and was awarded and nominated for several end-of-the-year accolades. Fun fact: An anime adaptation, titled Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, was released in 2013. If you like non-stop action and fluid combat mechanics, Bayonetta games are the perfect pick for you. Both installments ooze with fun and fast-paced action scenes. It’s a must-have for every gamer!
