Fallout is a franchise consisting of eight post-apocalyptic role-playing video games created in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. All events in the series are set in the 22nd and 23rd century. It’s a dystopian, retrofuturistic world heavily influenced by the America’s post-war culture (a unique combination of hope, technology, fear, and nuclear annihilation). The Fallout series is said to be a spiritual successor of 1988’s Wasteland. Although the game worlds are different, the story, locations, inhabitants, and characters (both playable and non-playable) draw many parallels. The first two installments in the series, Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998), were developed by Black Isle Studios and are considered groundbreaking among the RPG fans. Since the release of Fallout 3 (2008) the franchise took a different approach. Fallout games became first-person shooters (with some RPG elements) set in the open world. It made the gameplay more simple and accessible, a fact that was both praised and criticized by the series’ fans. The most recent installment in the series is Fallout 4, released in late 2015. Mafia is a series of action-adventure video games developed by the 2K studio. They are set in fictional cities modeled after America’s most prominent urban sites. The games’ historical setting starts from Great Depression-era Lost Heaven (Mafia), and Empire Bay (Mafia II) to 1960s New Bordeaux (Mafia III). All Mafia games offer the players a big open world where they can choose various missions to progress an overall story and engage in numerous side activities. Every single game in the Mafia series focuses on a different protagonist who usually attempts to rise through the ranks of the city’s criminal underworld. Although their actions usually result in them falling out of favor, their motives are different in each installment. Mafia games are renown for being immersive and accurate in their portrayal of American history. This, combined with an open world and great soundtrack, was enough to place the franchise among the best of its genre. If you like games like GTA and Watchdogs, Mafia is definitely a game for you.
