XCOM is a reboot of the original X-Com, created by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. It’s a sci-fi video game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasion of Earth. The series began in 1994 with the strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown. The original franchise (developed by MicroProse) included six published games and two novelizations. The series achieved a sizable cult following and has influenced many other video games; including the creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes. The XCOM series began in 2012 with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was a critical and commercial success, with immediately spawn an expansion, called Enemy Within, as well as a prequel, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. The video game series focuses on the unnamed space marine who needs to fight for survival against the hellish hordes of demons and undead. The first game in the series, titled Doom, was released in 1993 and is considered to be one of the pioneering FPS games. It introduced features such as 3D graphics, multiplayer gameplay, and support for player-created modifications. Since the release of original Doom, the series has spawned numerous sequels and even more expansion packs. In Doom games, players have to battle the countless forces of Hell, consisting of demons, mutants, and the undead. There have been four major installments, the most recent one published in 2016. Since its debut, over 10 million copies of games in the Doom series have been sold. Fun fact: Doom’s protagonist, an unnamed marine, was ranked as the fifth most “badass” male character in the video game's history. When people say “FPS”, they usually think about either Doom or Quake. The latter, albeit much younger, was definitely the more “active” on the market which resulted in many installments in the series. It’s one of the most iconic titles in the FPS genre, with millions of loyal fans across the world. Quake is a series of first-person shooters, starting with the game of the same name. In first Quake (released in 1996) players must find their way through various maze-like, dark, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons. Quake II (1997) and Quake 4 (2005) are equally dark but unlike Quake set in the future where humans are in conflict with a cybernetic race known only as the Strogg. The third installment in the series, Quake III Arena (1999), was a multiplayer-focused FPS and a response to the increasingly popular Unreal Tournament game. Quake games are iconic and even now, after all these years, they can bring a smile on gamer’s face. A title definitely worth trying!
